Papa's Girl

During my pregnancy, Abigail was known as "Baby B". At our very first ultrasound, the technician, Mike, guessed that it was a girl because it was still and appeared to be posing for the picture. Once the shock of TWINS wore off, I told myself that I would be happy with whatever we had. Secretly I wished for one of each or two girls. I was certain that I wouldn't know what to do with two boys. Matt was wishing for one of each or two boys for exactly the same reason. On our drive to Portland for an ultrasound, I told Matt that I had a good feeling we were having one of each. I reminded him that good things routinely happened to us on Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. In 2006, we moved into our home and in 2009, we attended an ice cutting weekend at Libby Camps, therefore we were going to get good news at our ultrasound that day. I prayed that the first baby photographed was a girl so I could breath easy for the rest of the appointment. Once the ultrasound began the technician identified "Baby A" as a boy. At that point I reached out and grabbed Matt's hand and began praying that "Baby B" was a girl. They took several pictures of "Baby A", one of which showed him giving a "thumbs up". In my mind "Baby A" was telling me to relax...there is a girl next door!
Abigail Rita Kopishke was born at 11:48 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2011. She weighed 5 pounds 3 ounces and was 19 inches long.Since the first time Abigail set eyes on Papa (my father) in
the NICU, she was smitten. Abby's face lights up when Papa enters a room. He is able to soothe her and put her into a trance with, what I call, his "Papa Dance". He cradles her in his arms or holds her at his shoulder and gently bounces around the room humming and making bum-bum sounds.Having two daughters, six foreign exchange "daughters", and three granddaughters, my father has a special bond with women. He always told us growing up that girls were easier to raise than boys. I am not sure how he knows this, since he never had a son. Now that I have a girl and a boy, I will be able to tell him truth.
