Page Turners (Man Edition)

After I posted Page Turners I thought about the books that I bought for Matt to read to prepare for fatherhood. I decided that since today is "Two For Tuesday" I would write a second post about his reading list, if you can call it that since he didn't read a single book.

Keeping the Baby Alive till Your Wife Gets Home
by Walter Roark

I bought this (and the following) book for Matt to read while I was pregnant. Since Matt had very little experience with babies (he had NEVER changed a daiper) I wanted him to be somewhat prepared for what was about to rock his world. This book serves up a plate full of valid information and fatherly tips with a generous helping of humor with chapters like Poopies: a Sticky Situation, Top to Bottom and Secrets to Avoiding Infant Abuse. Throughout the book there are humorous illustrations as well as "POP" (get it?) quizes, True or False questions, and DO and DON'T lists. I actually read this book myself (despite the warning not to on the back of the book-seriously) when I was on bedrest and had nothing better to do. I figured if Matt wasn't going to read it, I didn't want my money to go to waste. It was really funny and worth the few bucks I paid for it online. It would make a really great "Man Shower" gift for a soon-to-be new dad.

Mack Daddy: Mastering Fatherhood Without Losing Your Style, Your Cool, or Your Mind

by Larry Bleindner

I didn't read this book (and neither did Matt) myself but I have a feeling it is written for the more metrosexual, macho fathers-to-be. Since I have no personal opinion of the book I will tell you what it says in the back cover and you can form your own opinions.
"Just because you're going to be a dad doesn't mean life as you know it it over. The truth is, fatherhood can be very cool-if you know how to do it right. Mack Daddy if for every guy out there who wants to raise the best kid possible without losing his edge as a man. This isn't a book about how to get in touch with you nurturing side. (Kids already have a mom.) This is real stuff, unfiltered advice for real men-guys who don't give a $#!+ about being sensitive or politically correct.
From dealing with your hormonal partner (there is no "we" in pregnant) to handling the birth and beyond, Mack Daddy will tell you everything you need to know-guerilla feeding techniques, changing diapers on the fly, downshifting your driving lingo from XXX to PG, making your kid fearless, cutting through school B.S., dealing with
hot mommas, and making it all fun-to steer your way to being a dad who's cool, in control, and even more his own man than ever before."

The Baby Owner's Manual: Operating Instructions, Trouble-Shooting Tips, and Advice on First-Year Maintenance

by Louis Borgenicht, M.D. and Joe Borgenicht, D.A.D.
The book was given to Matt by our friend Elizabeth at his "Man Shower" (see below). Matt works on engines and other mechanical things in the garage and basement a lot so this book was perfect for him. It is seriously written like the operators manual for some home appliance complete with diagrams and chapters, such as, Preparation and Home Installation, Feeding: Understanding the Baby's Power Supply, and Safety and Emergency Maintenance. We had fun flipping through the book and sharing the funniest bits (basically the whole book) during the "Man Shower".

Since the majority of our friends are guys, they weren't invited to my baby showers so I threw Matt and "Man Shower" so he and his buddies could celebrate his impending fatherhood. Matt is the first of his crew to get married and have children so I decided to have a little fun with him and his bachelor friends. I printed pictures of various baby gear like a breast pump, rectal thermometer, and Diaper Genie. Each guy looked at each picture and had to write down what it was or what it was used for. The answers they came up with were HILARIOUS! If you plan to host a "Man Shower" I highly recommend playing this game!
