You've Got a Friend

One thing that has really been invaluable to me as a twin mom is knowing and having the support of other twin moms. When I found out that I was expecting twins I was working in a school with three other twin parents. They quickly came to my aid and told me some basics about what to expect, what to buy, and how they have survived. I found it really helpful to get some perspective from people that had been down the road I was now heading. I listened to EVERYTHING they had to say and used their knowledge to create my baby registry, set up my nursery, and basically plan my future.

Nadia, (Finley) Risa, and Grace

After Tanner and Abigail were born and I felt capable enough to take them out of the house alone, I began going to a breastfeeding support group at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine, called Mother's Milk. At one of our weekly "Boob Group" meetings I met Risa who is the mother of fraternal twin girls, Nadia and Grace. Risa and I exchanged phone numbers and became good friends. We frequently call one another to ask for advice or swap stories about our twins and their growth and development. We get together for play dates, birthdays, and have shared baby clothes.

Finley, Brooke (Abigail), and Margaret

During a Daddy visit at Miller School we were approached by the art teacher, Brooke, who told us that she was expecting twins. Although we didn't have much time to talk, she said that she would like to "pick our brains" about being twin parents. Brooke and I exchanged several emails over the next few months and we invited her and her boyfriend Colin for dinner to meet Tanner and Abigail, check out our set up, and ask any/all their "twin" questions. After Brooke and Colin's visit I decided that I would start a blog about being a twin mom so that I could share my experiences with other twin parents. I don't claim to be an expert...I just write about what works for us. Brooke's identical twin girls, Finley and Margaret were born in March.

Darcie at her Baby Shower in Caribou

Several months ago I found out that my sister's high school friend, Darcie, was expecting twins! I quickly sent her an email and offered her my friendship, support, and infant car seats! Over the next few months, Darcie sent me (almost) daily emails asking questions about nursing bras, swings, baby food storage, registries, and even what kind of car I drive. She and her husband Tyler came for dinner, like Brooke and Colin, and left with a trunk full of baby gear that Tanner and Abigail had out grown. As they were getting into their car to leave Darcie said, "Your house is like Babies R Us. We may not need a registry anymore!" Since their visit Darcie became my #1 blog follower and her daily emails helped inspire future blog posts. Darcie recently gave birth to her twins, Jack and Scarlet, on October 14th! I can't wait to meet them.

Abigail and Tanner (16 months old)

I am so fortunate to have other twin moms to get and/or give support to. I enjoy blogging about Tanner and Abigail and our adventures together and I hope that it has helped (or will help) other twin parents. Being a twin mom is a challenge and having these ladies in my life has really made it so much more special. We will always be connected because of our kids and I look forward to watching their children grow as much as my own.
