Road Trip

When traveling with twins it is always nice to have an extra set of hands to help with "crowd control" at pit stops and "cabin fever" in the car. I didn't travel with Tanner and Abigail by myself until they were over a year old. Although it is nice to have another adult near by for emergencies traveling with twins by yourself is possible. If I can do it, you can too!

Recently Tanner, Abigail, and I went to Caribou to visit my parents, my sister and her family. My mother had been visiting with us for a week so she was my co-pilot on the ride north. It is about 230 miles from here to there and without kids I was able to do it in a little over four hours...thanks to our precious cargo, those days are long gone.

Packed for four days in Caribou

I dressed Tanner and Abigail in comfy travel clothes and we hit the road as soon as I had the car packed at 9:00 a.m. I planned to "shove off" at this time because it is when the twins normally go down for their morning nap. They were asleep about five minutes into the trip and slept until we got to Bangor at 10:30 a.m.

Let's get this show on the road Mom!

We stopped at Sam's Club to fill up the tank and take advantage of the clean bathrooms to change the babies. Of course we shopped a bit too. I walked out with a case of diapers, several outfits for the babies, and a Sam's Club membership of my own.

Are we there yet?

We left Bangor at 11:45 p.m. and ended up having to stop in Medway an hour later to change and feed the babies. I brought one into the rest stop while my mom watched the other. Once they were both changed we all sat down at a picnic table and I fed them their lunch. We left Medway at 1:10 p.m. and stopped in Houlton around 2:00 p.m. just long enough to hit the Burger King drive thru for a light lunch for ourselves. The twins napped on and off for the remained of the trip.
We arrived in Caribou at 3:15 p.m. about 6 hours after leaving Liberty...two adults, two toddlers, four stops, and two diaper changes.

For our return trip I flew solo with Tanner and Abigail. We left at 9:40 a.m. and they were both asleep by 10:00 a.m. I was in need of some coffee so I called my sister to inquire about a Dunkin Donuts drive thru in Presque Isle...luckily I hadn't passed it by yet. When traveling alone with the twins, drive thrus are essential since I have no one to sit with them while I run into a store and I am not going to leave them alone in the car.

Cruising and Snoozing

I decided not to stop in Medway since they were both still sleeping. Of course a few minutes after we passed the rest stop they both woke up and I got a whiff of poop from the backseat...just my luck. We arrived in Bangor at 12:30 p.m. and once again stopped at Sam's Club.

Sam's Club Siblings

Sam's Club is one of the few places that has carts that can accommodate two kiddos. I brought the diaper bag and their lunch into the store with me. When we got inside I changed both babies and then walked around browsing and sampling the treats being served at the end of each isle. I pulled the cart up to one of the tables they have at the front of the store and fed the babies as they sat side by side. After checking out I bought a hot dog and soda for myself (for under $2.00). We left Bangor at 2:15 p.m.

On the road again!

We arrived home at 3:30 p.m. about six hours after leaving Caribou...one adult, two toddlers, two stops, and one diaper change.
