Independent Eaters

A lot has changed since Tanner and Abigail took their first bites of food in November 2010. We started out with rice cereal and purees and moved towards finger foods and now table foods. As they have become more independent eaters the "tools" we have used to feed them has changed.

In the beginning we used Take N Toss Infant Spoons and Gerber Soft Bite Spoons.

The next milestone was sippy cups. I quickly learned that not all sippy cups are created equal! Tanner and Abigail started with Take N Toss Sippy Cups but we quickly switched to Playtex Lil' Gripper Spout Cups when they repeatedly threw their cups to the floor. The Playtex cups don't leak and are easy to clean and put back together.

We also tried Munchkin Mighty Grip Trainer Cups but they were more difficult to clean and put back together. The rubber part isn't secured into the lid very well so we had issues with them leaking too.

Next Tanner and Abigail began eating more finger foods so we introduced forks and began letting them feed themselves. We started with the Take N Toss Flatware but found that the forks were very dull (obviously) which made it difficult for Tanner and Abigail to stab the food themselves. My friend Elizabeth bought them Gerber Graduates Kiddy Cutlery Forks for Christmas and they make it much easier for Tanner and Abigail to eat independently.

Today Tanner and Abigail eat with a spoon and fork and sippy cup (we are working towards open mouth cups). They feed themselves off of a sectioned tray or bowl when we aren't feeding them ourselves.
