What Goes Up, Must Come Down...Eventually

Since Tanner began crawling a few weeks ago he has added pulling to stand to his bag of tricks. The only problem with this new skill is that he has yet to master getting down from standing. The only way I have seen him get down from standing (unassisted) is by falling, not the recommended approach.Tanner likes to crawl over to the coffee table and pull himself up to play with the Melissa and Doug Bead-Maze or stand at the end table and look at (knock off) the board books. He plays for several minutes and may even cruise around the table to the couch or chair. After a while he gets tired of standing but doesn't know how to get himself down. He gets frustrated and wines and/or cries until someone comes to his rescue and sits him down on the floor or he falls down, hitting his face or head on the way down.
The same thing happens if he is playing in the Pack N Play...he pulls himself to stand and can't get back down where the toys are.The other day after I put Tanner and Abigail down for their afternoon nap, they both stood up in their cribs to talk with each other (I was listening on the baby monitor). Eventually Abby laid down and went to sleep, but Tanner stood there talking and eventually crying towards her crib. After a few minutes I went in and laid him down and he went to sleep. At night he stands himself up and cruises around his crib to the light switch and turns the nursery light on and off (Matt now loosens the lightbulb at bedtime).Tanner didn't begin crawling until after his first birthday so he is a little behind Abigail as far as that milestone is concerned. However Matt and I don't remember Abby having difficulty getting down once she learned to pull herself up. We are fairly certain she was able to do both at once. Neither of us really know how to approach this issue...should we continue to sit him down when he gets visibly frustrated or do we let him cry and try to figure it out in his own time?Note: As I was typing this blog entry Matt
returned home with Tanner and Abigail from his parent's house. He stood Tanner up next to the coffee table in the living room where I was sitting on the couch. As soon as Matt left to get Abby from the car, Tanner fell down and hit his chin on the edge of the coffee table...need I say more?
