Head Gear
When my friend Ella began the packing process for her BIG move to Kodiak, Alaska, she gave me many wonderful (previously loved) baby/toddler items...carriers, crib, stroller, toys, and clothing. Every week at handbell practice Ella would have some bag of goodies for me to bring home for Tanner and Abigail. Each bag usually contained yet another part to a baby gate that she had previously given to me and was continuing to find bits and pieces of throughout her home...love you Ella!
One particular week our goodie bag contained a pair of Flap Happy Flap Hats. I tucked them away for the summer months and about a month ago I dug them out for Tanner and Abigail to wear while splashing in their kiddie pool. Our Flap Happy hats are 100% cotton with a modest brim and flap that hangs down in back to shield their neck from the sun. They are UPF 50+ so in addition to the SPF 50 sunblock I smear all over them before going outside they are good to go.
My only issue with these hats is that there aren't any straps on them to keep Tanner and Abgail from taking them off every five seconds, which they did constantly the first time they wore them. I laid a towel out on the ground next to the pool thinking that I could lay there and catch some rays while they splashed around in the pool...little did I know that I would be up and down continuously replacing hats. It was not the relaxing afternoon that I thought it was going to be. Once we came inside and the twins were taking their afternoon nap, I examined one of the hats to see if they could be modified. I snipped a small hole just above the elastic band on each side where the brim and flap meet. I would use some sort of ribbon or string to tie the hat onto each child's head...TA DA!
The next day as I dressed the twins for swimming I strung a piece of curling ribbon (it was all I could find) through each hole and tied a nice bow under each of their chins. Once again I laid my towel on the ground next to the pool feeling triumphant, my problem was solved, we were all going to have some fun in the sun. About two minutes into our pool party, both babies noticed the shiny, gold bow under the other's chin and immediately began undoing them thus allow their hat to be removed...UGH! Later that day I took the twins for a walk in their (uncovered) wagon so I put the Flap Happy hats on their heads but this time I tied the ribbon behind their heads instead of under their chins...PROBLEM SOLVED!
Author's Note: While typing up this blog entry I went to the Flap Happy website and I see that they do make the Flap Hat with straps. Since mine don't have straps I will continue to tie them on with curling ribbon, which I have now upgraded to actual ribbon.
