What Does This Button Do?

Abby's newest obsession is buttons...on the television, Wii, stereo, remote controls, and even clothes! Since she is able to crawl and pull to stand her love of buttons has blossomed. She can go to the buttons, she no longer has to wait for the buttons to come to her.She is able to turn the television on and off by pressing the power button and she can adjust the volume and change the channel. This often happens when she is watching a Baby Einstein DVD. Yesterday she got a hold of the TV remote and changed the satellite input. I didn't know how to fix it so it stayed that way until Matt got home form work. Last week she managed to change it so only the Spanish channels appeared on our guide channel.
Yesterday afternoon as I went to move the Pack N Play out on to the porch I noticed a Wii game in the bottom. I caught her pressing buttons on the Wii earlier in the day, what I didn't know was that she had ejected a game at the time. Luckily she threw it into the Pack N Play instead of breaking it into pieces.

Our stereo has a demo mode that is very flashy and only Aunt Heidi knows how to make it stop. Even though we have the bin of toys in front of the stereo, the flashing lights attract Abigail's attention. She knows that she isn't supposed to play with the stereo (at least I think she does) so she takes a toy out of the bin and drops in behind, between the bin and the stereo. She says, "Uh oh!" and proceeds to push the bin out of the way to retrieve the lost toy. Once she gets the toy she begins pressing buttons on the stereo. "I got my toy. I guess I will press some buttons since I am right here."

Several weeks ago she grabbed the DVD remote off the coffee table and began pressing buttons. She found the eject button and across the room the DVD opened up. She quickly turned to see where the noise came from. She pressed the button again and the DVD closed. She was amazed! Matt and I couldn't help but laugh.

We discipline her (and now Tanner) when she touches these things that she isn't supposed to play with. We say things like, "Not for Abby" or "No touch", give her bottom a slap, and move her away...but she usually goes right back to the scene of the crime. I have begun putting her in "time out" in the Pack N Play (or the Sin Bin as my husband refers to it) when she repeatedly plays with things that are off limits to her and Tanner. Someday she will learn...right?!
